đź’ˇ Frequently Asked Questions: Lawn Scarification & Rentals
When is the best time of year to scarify a lawn in South Africa?
The absolute best time to scarify is in early spring (late August to September). This is when warm-season grasses like Kikuyu and Bermuda wake up from winter dormancy and begin active growth, allowing the lawn to recover quickly. A second light scarification can also be done in autumn (March to April) to clear out summer debris before winter.
What is the difference between scarifying and mowing?
A lawnmower cuts the tips of the grass blades horizontally. A lawn scarifier uses vertical spikes that rip into the lawn profile. It doesn’t cut the grass shorter; instead, it mechanically removes the dead, suffocating layer of thatch and moss trapped above the soil.
How long does it take for the grass to recover after scarifying?
Directly after using the scarifier, your lawn will look brown, thin, and a bit messy—this is completely normal! If you water the lawn well and apply a good booster fertilizer like Fertilawn (R290 per bag/covers 100sq/m) right after, a healthy Kikuyu or Bermuda lawn will bounce back completely within 2 to 3 weeks, returning much thicker and greener than before.
Can I use this machine to level out bumps or dig up garden beds?
No. This machine is strictly a dethatcher for established grass lawns. The vertical spikes are engineered to rip out the dead grass above the roots and ground. Using the machine to dig into bare earth, rocks, or hard garden soil will cause severe, expensive damage to the spikes and the engine itself. For breaking up soil, you should use a petrol power tiller like the Stihl MH 610 (R13 895.00 on promotion) instead.
How should I prepare my lawn before using the rented scarifier?
-
- Mow the grass short: Cut your lawn a bit lower than usual a day or two before.
- Clear the area: Thoroughly clear the yard of all stones, pet toys, sticks, and exposed tree roots.
- Mark your sprinklers: Use small flags or sticks to mark out exactly where your irrigation sprinkler heads are located so you do not accidentally run over them.
What do I need to bring to collect the scarifier rental?
To collect the machine from our shop in Ferndale, Randburg, you will need to provide a valid South African ID or Driver’s License, your vehicles lisence plate details, the R750 refundable deposit, and the rental fee for the days required. The machine fits into most standard vehicle boots or bakkies. But please enquire beforehand as the scarifiers are in high demand at this time of the year.Â
